The Philando Castile Community Peace Garden is a space for reflection, healing, and justice, honoring Philando Castile. On July 6, 2016, Castile was fatally shot by police on Larpenteur Avenue, despite his innocence. The incident, broadcast live on Facebook, was seen globally, sparking outrage. A grassroots memorial emerged, adorned with tributes from friends, neighbors, and artists. Castile’s death left a grieving community and a nation grappling with police violence, a crisis further magnified by the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
In response to this tragedy, Castile’s family, community members, and organizations united to create a lasting tribute at the location where he was murdered. Located along the renamed Philando Castile Avenue, the garden is a place for mourning, remembrance, and activism. Adjacent to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, it transforms the site into a space for contemplation and unity, embodying Castile’s enduring spirit and the community’s commitment to justice.
The design team collaborated to ensure the garden fosters deep reflection. Through community engagement and artistic integration, the space was shaped to memorialize Castile and inspire conversations about racial justice and police accountability. This process ensured the garden became a powerful symbol of resilience and hope.

Selecting the garden’s location took three years and extensive community input. Initially, the site was an unremarkable planted berm between the state fairgrounds and a county road, straddling Saint Paul and Falcon Heights. Over time, as Castile’s family and community gathered there, it became an informal site of remembrance.
There was initial resistance to naming it the “Philando Castile Memorial” due to concerns about police-community relations. However, the community ultimately embraced it as a sacred space. This transformation highlighted the site’s contested nature, requiring the design team to navigate social and political tensions. Through careful analysis and engagement, they developed a phased design that honors Castile’s legacy while acknowledging the site’s complexities.
The garden’s design reflects Castile’s life and the sorrow of his death through pathways, plantings, and artwork. The layout integrates symbolic elements to create a contemplative experience while also accommodating large memorial gatherings.

Today, the Philando Castile Community Peace Garden is maintained by local volunteers and is officially recognized through the Friends of the Philando Castile Peace Garden, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This designation ensures its ongoing stewardship and reflects the community’s dedication to preserving Castile’s memory while advocating for justice and healing.
The garden continues to serve as a gathering place for annual events and a sanctuary for those seeking solace. It also functions as a platform for activism, demonstrating the power of public space in the pursuit of justice. Through educational programs, community events, and advocacy efforts, the garden remains an active site of engagement.
The Philando Castile Community Peace Garden is a lasting tribute to Castile’s life and legacy, showing how memorial landscapes foster healing, reflection, and social change. More than just a place of remembrance, it is a living symbol of a community’s enduring commitment to justice, equity, and peace. It underscores the profound role that public spaces play in the collective process of mourning, learning, and healing, ensuring that Castile’s memory continues to inspire future generations.
