SATOKO MURATAKE, PLA, ASLA  DIRECTOR OF PROCESS

Hello, I’m Satoko.

My approach focuses on listening to both people and the land. I am passionate about weaving together community narratives, historical elements, and environmental contexts to shape both the functionality and aesthetic experience of a space. In my designs, I prioritize using recycled, repurposed, or locally sourced materials to reduce carbon footprints.

My upbringing in Japan instilled a deep appreciation for nature from a young age, profoundly influencing my perspective and approach, allowing me to seamlessly blend cultural sensitivity with a vision for sustainable, circular human habitation and coexistence with the natural world. This connection with nature not only rejuvenates me but also deepens my understanding and appreciation of the natural world, continually influencing my professional practice.

Outside of work, my passion for nature continues. I find inspiration in hiking through forests and rivers, engaging in pattern hunting, and observing the nuances of seasonal changes. Foraging fiddleheads, mushrooms, herbs, and berries are activities I cherish. I also enjoy creating ink and artwork using plants from my garden, a joyful exploration I share with my daughter.

Favorite plant: Moss, Bryophyta
